Inserting and Removing Compact Flash Memory Card

The next step is to make sure a compact flash card is in the camera. The camera comes with a 8mb compact flash memory card (see the figure below) that can hold 16 1600×1200 pictures in JPG (compressed) format. For most of the cases, this compact flash card is already in the camera, and, as a result, you do not have to do anything about it. If you need more memory, please use your own memory card.

While it is possible to use a serial cable for downloading pictures, it is very slow. Hence, you should use a compact flash reader to retrieve the pictures stored on a compact flash card. I can certainly download the pictures and upload them on our Unix machine. But, it will take some time to this job down, say at least one day.

Please follow the procedure below to insert and remove a compact flash card.

  1. Turn Off the Camera
Turn the mode dial (see figure below) to the OFF position.

  2. Open the Card Slot
Turn the camera upside down so that the handgrip is facing you (see the figure below). Then, open the card slot. Note that the car slot cover is marked with CARD. If the camera is on a tripod, you must detach it from the tripod to access the card slot. Open the card slot cover.

  3. Insert the Memory Card
Now insert the memory card as shown in the figure below. Push the card all the way down into the slot. Note that the card slot only accepts CompactFlash cards of Type I. Do not try to insert memory cards of other types (e.g., Type II or SmartMedia cards).

  4. Fold the Card-Release Latch Over and Close the Cover
When the memory card is pushed into its position, the card-release latch pops up. Fold this latch to the left as shown in the figure below. Then, close the card slot cover, and the camera is ready.
