University Policy on
Academic Computing Laboratory Fees

The full text of the policy is not available at this time. The essence of the policy is this:

Each student is assessed a basic computing fee that provides that student with a computer account, that at a minimum has the ability to send and receive email, print things, do word processing and operate a spreadsheet (with graphical support). Other capabilities may be provided at the discretion of each department. These capabilities are provided by the student's major department, and the fees go to that department directly to support that service.

Any class that uses computer resources over and above that provided by the department's basic fee may have an associated course fee to cover the expenses of the added resources. Added resources include things like special hardware or software, or expectations of significant additional use of the basic facilities. The course fees go directly to the department that provides the resources for the support of those resources.

Any department may choose to offer any student (not just majors) access to its facilities for a fee.

Fees ammounts are approved by the Provost, subject to the review and recommendation of the Student Fees subcommittee of the Computer Advisory Committee (CAC). Fees changes are generally proposed and approved once a year, taking effect each fall term. The meetings of the review subcommittee are open to the public.
